Under the global green environmental trend, the fact that more energy-efficient LED lighting is gradually replacing traditional lighting has become indisputable. Although LED is a point light source like incandescent bulbs, LEDs with the same luminous flux have the advantages of much smaller volume and very low radiant heat. This performance characteristic of LEDs has opened the door to innovative imagination for Chinese lighting fixture manufacturers.

When we observe our surroundings a little more carefully, LEDs are already everywhere. Behind the mobile phones, displays, and buttons we use, there are backlight LEDs; when we turn on our computer at work and the TV when we rest, behind the colorful displays, high-quality LED backlight modules are running; when we drive home, the tail lights and brake lights on our cars are also likely to use LEDs; in terms of building decoration, wall washer lights, various billboards, indicator lights, etc., the use of LEDs is also very comprehensive.

In addition, there are still some areas that you and I don't often pay attention to, which are very likely to belong to the field of LED lighting applications in the future:

  仓库照明:

Most warehouses use mercury lamps for lighting, with typical specifications of: power 250W, luminous flux 11,000 lm, color temperature 5,000K, and a lifespan of 8,000 hours. According to Zhang Guangwen, Deputy General Manager of the Hong Kong Marketing Division of WPG Holdings' subsidiary WPI Group, since new LEDs have significantly improved luminous output, with high heat dissipation efficiency, energy savings, a lifespan of up to 35,000 hours, and price advantages, LED warehouse lights are highly competitive in the market. Zhang Guangwen recommends using the Cree XLamp XM-L white LED. In its cool white series, the maximum luminous flux can reach 280 lm @700mA or 910 lm @3A, with a luminous efficacy of 138 lm/W.

  牙科治疗:

In the tooth restoration process, the final step requires blue light to polymerize the ceramic material, with a blue light intensity of at least 1,000 mW/cm² sustained for approximately 10 seconds. Zhang Guangwen introduced that the newly developed blue LEDs, in terms of both wavelength and power, meet the above requirements. Zhang Guangwen recommends using the Cree XLamp MC-E Blue LED. It is a 4-chip packaged LED with a wavelength range of 465-480 nm and a power of 1,480 mW @350 mA.

  无线控制LED灯具:

Generally speaking, when we want to turn a light on or off, we have to go to the switch button or control room near the fixture. However, if we have a remote controller in hand that can turn the fixture on or off at will, this would bring considerable convenience to our daily life. If all the lights in the residence are replaced with LED fixtures equipped with an RF receiver, each light in the home can be independently controlled for on/off or dimming functions via a wireless remote control.

An RF receiver can be added to the power driver section to control the power switch or to adjust the magnitude of the driving current to achieve dimming functionality. In addition to power solutions, Marvell and Texas Instruments can also provide Wi-Fi or ZigBee wireless transmission solutions.

Plant Light:

LED plant lights are light sources that can promote plant growth, and constitute a large market worth over 10 billion RMB per year worldwide. Experts note that plant lights will reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and offer significant environmental value. Currently, LED plant lights are still in the research and trial stages, and represent a hotspot in the development of the LED industry. Nordic countries pay special attention to environmental protection and low-carbon initiatives, and they were the first to adopt LED plant lights. LED plant lights require special spectrum combinations, and improvements in technology together with reductions in cost are the key to large-scale application.

  Automotive Headlights:

LEDs have been widely used in automotive interior lighting, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals. However, their use in automotive headlights has only just begun. Automotive headlights require a stronger, more focused, and higher-quality light source. Fan Zhencan explained that some high-end automotive brands (such as Audi) have already started using LED headlights on certain models. The adoption of LEDs in automotive headlights marks an important milestone in the development history of LEDs. Currently, due to technical factors, China is not yet able to produce such LED headlights.

  Flashlights/Industrial and Mining Lamps:

In applications such as flashlights and industrial/mining lamps that use batteries or rechargeable batteries, since the battery capacity is limited, if the light source has high luminous efficiency, the usage time can be greatly increased. Fan Zhencan stated that LEDs are the most efficient light source currently in use at the same brightness level, offering significant advantages.

In addition to the above applications, new LED applications will emerge in personal apparel and certain consumer products; furthermore, related applications combined with solar energy will also arise. LEDs have their own optical and structural characteristics, and lighting designers can design different lighting products based on these characteristics. With the market's demand for high-quality lighting, future lighting products will inevitably show a diversified development trend.

Of course, LED is not a panacea. To date, LED has not yet been developed to suit any type of lighting application. In certain emerging application markets such as emergency lighting, cabinet lighting, and automotive lighting, LED lighting has reached a relatively high level of maturity, while in some markets progress is slower. For example, in aquarium lighting, due to the high requirements for luminosity and color temperature, using LEDs to achieve the same specifications often costs three times as much, and it has not yet become widespread.

Currently, the most mature application in the LED lighting market is decorative lighting, with outdoor wall washers and advertisements seen everywhere. LED indoor decorative lighting still has relatively high costs and is only adopted in designs with high decoration budgets. The largest demand is for indoor main lighting tubes, MR16, PAR lamps, etc. As products mature and prices drop, LEDs will quickly replace general indoor lighting fixtures. As for outdoor street lighting and automotive lighting, due to the harsher usage environments and conditions, technical bottlenecks in module design and LED heat dissipation need to be overcome to maintain high luminous efficiency. These are currently mostly policy-driven demonstration applications, and it will still take 1-2 years before large-scale application can be achieved.

At the current stage of development, LED lighting appears in the public eye more as a replacement luminaire, such as bulb lamps, downlights, fluorescent lamps, etc. These products are all used to directly replace traditional lighting fixtures, which is also the golden key for LED lighting to open up the lighting market. In 2011, indoor lighting, commercial lighting, and factory lighting were still the main lighting forces, while outdoor lighting had greater variables.

LED applications face many challenges, with price issues being prominent

The more new LED applications emerge, the higher and broader the LED penetration rate becomes. Inevitably, situations requiring the confrontation of difficulties and challenges become more frequent. Continuous price reductions, increasing brightness requirements, and ongoing improvements in luminous efficacy (lm/W) are the most pressing problems currently troubling agents.

In the coming years, almost all LED applications will face the following common challenges:

  1. High technical and quality requirements. Whether for indoor or outdoor lighting, or LED backlighting, strict quality control of LED lamp beads is required. This necessitates accurate control of color temperature and the maintenance of long-term stability and consistency. Since the human eye is very demanding regarding white light quality, producing high-quality, stable white light is very challenging, requiring high standards for both materials and processes. Since many applications require high-brightness, high-power LEDs, excellent heat dissipation technology is also needed to ensure long LED lifespan and low light decay.

  2. Scale requirements. Currently, many domestic LED suppliers have a limited scale in mid-to-high-end LEDs and are unable to provide supporting products for numerous TV manufacturers or large lighting manufacturers, thus failing to gain recognition from major customers.

  3. Cost requirements. The widespread application of LEDs depends on the decline in LED product prices. Only when prices fall to a certain stage can LEDs be fully utilized in civilian lighting and other fields, allowing the market to develop fully.

The LED industry has undergone significant changes due to the addition of lighting applications. Previously, the communications market accounted for the largest share of LED applications, where the required components had relatively low functionality and limited demands for luminous efficiency. As the mobile phone market approaches saturation, the lighting market will replace it as the key battleground. However, how to develop technology to effectively maintain LED luminous efficiency and how to improve production quality to ensure flawless product functionality during application—these are the tickets for LED packaging manufacturers to enter this market.

Currently, the basic functions and applications of LEDs are gradually approaching real demand, and products have entered the mass production stage. Price issues, product standardization issues, and uncontrollable government energy subsidy programs in various countries remain difficulties that all LED industry practitioners need to overcome as soon as possible.

Challenges are also opportunities. The most concentrated contradiction—the LED price issue—has actually been on the agenda for a long time. With the rapid advancement of technology, LED prices will become increasingly affordable and functions will continue to improve in the future. It is expected that by 2015, LEDs will account for more than 30% of the entire lighting market.

Good opportunities don't stop at one. The current backlight market is mainly dominated by LED manufacturers from Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. On the one hand, this is because the quality of domestic LEDs still needs to be improved; on the other hand, it is because domestic LCD panels are monopolized by manufacturers related to Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, leaving mainland manufacturers without dominant power in the choice of backlight sources. In the second half of this year, several 8th-generation production lines in China will enter mass production successively, and domestic TV and module manufacturers will be able to independently choose suitable LED backlight partners. This is undoubtedly a great opportunity for local LED chip manufacturers.

Modular and intelligent LED lighting systems become the mainstream trend

Compared with the higher-cost one-off and customized production, batch production of LED modules offers clear price advantages. Therefore, for downstream LED lighting application companies, modularization is the optimal choice. With massive investment from midstream and upstream LED companies, the LED lighting industry has entered the era of modularization.

The current mainstream trend in the market is to develop modular lighting systems to meet special needs.

Modular LED combines the light source, heat dissipation components, and driver power supply into a module, which is mass-produced and used to manufacture standardized LED lighting products through molds.

The promotion of modular products can significantly reduce production costs for downstream LED lighting application companies and achieve better optical effects. When choosing a light source, buyers must not only clarify their product positioning and precise requirements, but also selecting a high-quality light source plays a crucial role.

Extended Reading: Phenomenon of Repeated Low-end Investment in the Domestic LED Industry

In recent years, investment in China's LED industry has been very hot. Since the investment community has generally recognized that LED is a very important component of the great cause of energy conservation and emission reduction worldwide, the LED industry has been favored both by the venture capital community and in public markets. A large amount of capital has entered the LED industry, particularly in the upstream segment.

Over the past two years, China has been the region with the most MOCVD equipment purchases worldwide. It is estimated that, due to government subsidies for MOCVD, the number of MOCVD units in China will reach 900 to 1,000 units by the end of this year, and there are thousands of packaging companies in China. Recently, some listed large enterprises have also been investing heavily in the LED industry, covering the upstream, midstream, and downstream of the industry chain together. The overall scale of China's LED industry is rapidly expanding.

It is precisely because, in recent years, many companies and personnel from different fields have successively entered the LED industry that the entire market is still in a state of chaos. He further predicts that within two years, LED lighting companies with poorer qualifications will face bankruptcy or large-scale talent mobility.

Various Problems Existing in the Entire Domestic LED Industry Chain:

1. Upstream chips: Currently, almost all enterprises are still using LEDs with the traditional sapphire substrate surface dual-electrode structure, and most enterprises can only produce low-power, small-size chips;

2. Important indicators such as light output efficiency are still catching up with Taiwanese and Korean companies, and there is still a significant gap compared with European, American, and Japanese companies;

3. Packaging: The main large-scale enterprises are all engaged in LED packaging for low-power products and indoor/outdoor displays and landscape lighting, lacking white light, especially lacking leading enterprises in the high-power segment.

4. The scale of individual enterprises is small, with most under RMB 100 million, and only a few enterprises reaching an output value of several hundred million RMB, which represents a significant gap compared with foreign enterprises at the scale of several hundred million USD.

5. Many enterprises have blindly extended into application products before growing and strengthening their core business. Due to insufficient technological R&D, small scale, limited independent intellectual property rights, and dispersed business focus, they have not yet formed a competitive advantage over large overseas enterprises.
