Потратили 4000 юаней на большой напольный светильник, а через год зрение ухудшилось на 200 градусов! Что же на самом деле защищают светильники для защиты глаз?

According to a report by Ningbo Evening News on July 28, last September, Yuanyuan from Ningbo, Zhejiang, just entered the first grade of primary school. Considering the significant increase in near-vision needs such as reading and writing after enrollment, his mother did her homework in advance and spent nearly 4,000 yuan on a popular large floor lamp.

Unlike traditional desk lamps, large floor lamps are movable floor-standing luminaires. Their core feature is a dual light source structure with top and bottom lights: the bottom light source vertically covers the desk to meet the local lighting needs for reading and writing; the top light source projects upwards to the ceiling, relying on diffuse reflection to supplement the ambient light of the entire room, achieving integrated lighting of 'desk main light + space auxiliary light'.

Yet even with a full set of top-tier eye-protection lighting, Yuanyuan's uncorrected vision continued to decline over just one year, increasing by 200 degrees, far exceeding the normal range.

After carefully inquiring about Yuanyuan's daily eye care habits, the doctor hit the nail on the head: the parents failed to hold the basic line of defense in myopia prevention and control, and their efforts were completely misdirected.

Originally, Yuanyuan did homework every day after school from around 4 PM to 6 PM, and in the evening, she also had to read and take online English classes. Her daily duration of near-vision use remained persistently high. Under such an intense visual load, the eye-protective effect of the lighting was significantly diluted, far from enough to offset the risk of myopia.

I. What exactly does the "eye protection" of large road lights protect?

As a popular category in the eye-care lighting track in recent years, the rise of large floor lamps is not without reason. It indeed addresses some pain points of traditional desk lamps, and its eye-care value has clear technical boundaries.

Compared to ordinary desk lamps, the core advantages of qualified large floor lamps focus on the comfort optimization of the lighting environment:

-Wider and more uniform illuminance coverage: The large road lamp has a larger luminous surface, with the desktop center illuminance generally reaching over 1000lux, and even exceeding 1300lux. The illuminance decay in the edge area is slower, resulting in better light uniformity across the entire desk, avoiding frequent pupil adjustments caused by 'bright center and dark corners', which can effectively reduce visual fatigue during reading and writing.

-Balance between ambient light and desk light: Through the diffuse reflection of the upper light source, the brightness difference between the desk and the surrounding environment is reduced, minimizing the light contrast when children look up or down, thereby reducing the accommodation burden on the eyes. It is especially suitable for long reading and writing scenarios.

-More comprehensive basic eye-care indicators: Mainstream large road light products generally meet standards such as RG0 exemption-level hazard-free blue light, no significant flicker, and high color rendering index (Ra90 or above), and are also generally superior to ordinary desk lamps in terms of glare control and light softness.

In short, a qualified large road light is a high-quality reading and writing lighting tool that can create a healthier and more comfortable indoor lighting environment and relieve eye strain, which is its real eye protection value. But "relieving eye strain" does not equal "myopia prevention and control".

II. How to Truly Protect Your Eyes Scientifically?

Director Zhao Na from the Ophthalmology Center of the Affiliated People's Hospital of Ningbo University stated that staring at screens closely for extended periods increases the burden on eye accommodation, accelerates tear evaporation, and leads to a combination of symptoms such as dryness, blurred vision, and fatigue, which can induce or exacerbate myopia. Furthermore, animations and short videos are highly engaging, causing children to unconsciously stare at the screen for long periods while watching, significantly reducing their blink rate. This is the key reason why electronic devices damage vision.

Modern medicine also shows that the onset and progression of myopia in children and adolescents is the result of the combined effects of genetics, environment, and behavior, among which near-work duration, viewing distance, and time spent on outdoor activities are the three core influencing factors.

Indoor lighting is part of the environmental factors—high-quality lighting environments can reduce visual fatigue and lower eye discomfort, but they cannot fundamentally reverse or block the axial elongation caused by prolonged near-vision tasks. For someone like Yuanyuan, who spends several hours a day continuously engaged in near-vision activities, the eyes remain in a state of intense accommodation regardless of how comfortable the lighting is, and the risk of myopia will continue to accumulate.

In this scenario, the large road light functions like a high-quality highway (lighting environment), but if the car (eyes) is constantly crawling in congestion (continuous contraction of the ciliary muscle), even the best road cannot alleviate the traffic paralysis (visual fatigue).

Truly effective children's vision protection requires the joint support of a three-tier system:

1. Base Layer: A compliant and comfortable light environment

This is a necessary prerequisite for eye protection, but not a sufficient condition. Choose products that comply with national standards for reading and writing desk lamps, prioritizing core indicators such as illuminance and uniformity, glare control, blue light hazard level, and color rendering index. Select an appropriate desk lamp or large floor lamp based on the size of the desk and the room's natural lighting to create a comfortable reading and writing light environment for your child.

2. Core Layer: Scientific Eye-Use Behavior Management

This is the core defense line for myopia prevention and control. Follow the '20-20-20' rule (every 20 minutes of near work, look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds), control the duration of each reading and writing session; maintain correct reading and writing posture; strictly manage the duration of electronic device usage, especially reducing the frequent use of small-screen devices.

3. Key Layer: Sufficient Exposure to Outdoor Natural Light

Ensure children spend no less than 2 hours outdoors every day; fragmented outdoor time accumulated throughout the day is equally effective. The protective effect of natural outdoor light on vision cannot be replaced by any indoor lighting product.

However, it is encouraging that many manufacturers and merchants have already realized this. With the popularization of AI technology, features such as smart dimming, circadian lighting modes, and posture reminders have become new selling points for large floor lamps, extending from simple "dimming" to "behavioral intervention + habit cultivation". For example, the AI proactive eye protection solution launched by NVC Lighting in collaboration with Jingming Shikong in the first half of the year breaks away from the product logic of a single eye protection lamp. Based on companion adaptive light technology, it integrates AI smart visual control devices to achieve eye use behavior perception and dynamic linkage with the light environment, representing a typical practical implementation in this track direction.

Floor-standing lamps are excellent lighting tools, but they are not a "talisman" for myopia prevention and control. For the lighting industry, abandoning exaggerated marketing, returning to the essence of optics, and combining smart technology to provide truly systematic eye protection solutions is the long-term way to win the trust of well-educated parents. For parents, don't let a lamp costing thousands of yuan give you a false sense of security. The real "vision insurance" lies in daily outdoor activities and good eye habits.
