[Case Study] Interior Lighting Design of John Lewis Department Store New York

The new John Lewis store renovation in New York has set a new energy-saving target of BREEAM Excellent rating. The store covers 8,800 square meters and is located within Vangarde Shopping Park, part of a new development in New York, with neighboring Next and Marks & Spencer stores. In retail terminology, John Lewis department stores are referred to as SFLDS - small full-line department stores. A typical standard department store might have an area of approximately 14,000 square meters.





The photos in the article show the lighting team inspecting whether the luminaires are operating perfectly on the eve of the grand opening of the new John Lewis store in New York. The lighting employs a 100% LED solution, using the third-generation GE Lighting Infusion LED modules, which means the reflectors can be easily swapped to adjust the beam without manual labor. Two types of modules are used: a 1500 lumen version and a 3000 lumen version, with a color rendering index of 85 Ra. The third-generation modules offer L70 90,000 hours; L95 50,000 hours, accounting for approximately 95% or more of the store's 3,400 LEDs.






As the first John Lewis SFLDS store to adopt full LED, it is hoped that this will become its first ever building to receive a BREEAM Excellent rating. The lighting load has dropped to 12W/m², while the previous John Lewis Stratford store had a lighting load of 18W/m². One of the main methods of reducing energy consumption is through the elimination of ambient lighting.




  Traditional department store lighting is divided into two parts: ambient lighting and main lighting design. One reason for this is that in the event of a power failure, ambient lighting will be activated by ceramic metal halide lamps, while LEDs do not require the system to include ambient lighting to compensate for the ceramic preheating time, as they can light up instantly via a backup generator. The store's central lighting design is based on the high contrast across different regions, with an average lighting level of 700 lux, a minimum general level of 150 lux, and peak displays that can exceed 2000 lumens.
