GE Lighting Shares New Vision for Road Lighting, Co-developing with the Chinese Market

　　GE Lighting gathered with numerous renowned domestic municipal management experts, technical experts, construction parties, road lighting designers, and road lighting manufacturers at the 2014 China Road Lighting Forum to jointly study and discuss the current status and future trends of urban management lighting in China. During the forum, GE Lighting shared its thoughts and insights on the practice of green road lighting solutions with attendees through the theme of "Light, Control, Road".

　　As the inventor of LED technology, GE Lighting has been committed to product development and application of LED technology in the field of green lighting, with road lighting being one of the vertical markets GE focuses on most. Along with the "energy conservation and emission reduction" goals proposed in this year's government work report at the Two Sessions, the road lighting field has increasingly become a key area for governments at all levels to directly respond to policies and implement energy conservation and emission reduction plans. GE's extensive road lighting experience accumulated in North American and international markets provides the most direct technical support for the brand to establish itself domestically and intensively cultivate the road lighting segment. In addition, addressing the special needs of the Chinese market, GE Lighting has also established a dedicated road lighting application scenario at its Xi'an Innovation Center in China to help customers more intuitively understand road lighting solutions. In terms of product development, based on customer demand orientation, GE has designed and launched a series of LED products suitable for road lighting, including Eco R250, Evolve TM Modular Street Light R250, and LED Iberia.

　　Heroes gathered at this China Road Lighting Forum, with various viewpoints clashing. The themed speech "Light, Control, Road" brought by GE Lighting was developed from three different perspectives — "product development, green solutions, smart applications" — elaborating on the service creed that "what GE's end users purchase is not only a road lighting system, but also a sense of safety and comfort." To achieve this creed, GE proposed three viewpoints:

First, in road lighting LED applications, the brightness and illuminance of light will profoundly affect the quality of road lighting safety. It is not merely about pursuing luminaire system efficiency or illuminating the road surface to ensure road safety. Optimizing road lighting effects must take into account the assessment of the effective area of light and the rational application of optical design to produce more flexible light distribution options that can effectively reduce the accident rate. In addition, considering road illuminance levels and uniformity levels, GE has proposed that in product development, more standardized LED lighting products need to be developed, providing multiple light distribution options, modular design, and more light distribution combinations, striving to achieve "standardized, but not limited," to provide product choices for flexible road lighting solutions.

Second, to achieve green road lighting solutions, GE emphasized the importance of "control." Whether it is controlling lighting needs on sunny and rainy days, in smoggy weather, or different traffic flow scenarios, or starting from the lumen depreciation compensation of luminaires, "control" will have a huge impact on the efficiency and energy savings of road lighting solutions. Addressing the major "control" challenges in road lighting solutions, GE provided an information collection system of "data to cloud as means, terminal control feedback as purpose" to ensure system compatibility and scalability. The use of GPS technology in individual luminaires makes it easier to identify the luminaire location during installation and replacement.

Third, regarding intelligent applications, GE has great confidence in its application prospects in the field of street lighting. To better welcome the expansion of LED from road lighting effects to IoT and other more socially impactful application scenarios, GE has also proposed proactive response strategies for wireless control and network security. For example, comprehensively using encryption methods in proprietary networks to ensure information transmission security, and ensuring signal accuracy through excellent network technology.

As mentioned in the previous article, the most important significance of this forum is to study and discuss the current status and future trends of urban lighting management in China through the sharing of existing lighting technologies and solutions.
