U.S. DOE Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium Releases LED Street Lighting Specification Document Template
The U.S. Department of Energy Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium was established in September 2009, primarily to address the issue of divergent LED street lighting standards among numerous cities. The organization will collect, analyze, and share technical information and practical cases related to LED street lighting. Its members are mostly town governments, public utilities, and energy efficiency organizations, and do not include manufacturers.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium released an LED street lighting specification template, aimed at helping municipalities and utilities evaluate or install LED street lighting projects. The draft of this template was released in April this year, indicating that the public could submit comments on the draft before May 2.
This street lighting template is released for LED street lighting, which can effectively reduce maintenance costs and improve road visibility. The released template contains two different versions of city system specification options in Appendix A, covering light source quality specifications and optical performance specifications, with the aim of maximizing the combination of local features to improve application efficiency, such as pole spacing and installation height; Appendix B contains material specification options, without considering regional features. Each city can choose flexibly, allowing users to modify default values to suit their local design standards.
Edward Smalley, Director of the Municipal Solid-State Lighting Street Lights organization, said: "Converting our nation's street lights to LED street lights can significantly reduce energy consumption and improve lighting quality, but the premise is that the street lights are installed in a standardized and compliant manner. This new street light regulation will help cities and utilities make better choices."
