Mark van den berg, Philips Middle East Marketing Director, stated that by 2015, nearly 50% of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council, i.e., the six Gulf states) market will adopt LED lighting technology.

Mark van den berg recently noted that Philips has shifted its focus to LED applications, as LED is the future of lighting technology.

Mark van den berg said that by 2015, more than half the market will adopt LED technology. He stated that currently about 10% of applications in the GCC market use LED technology, and in certain fields, LED lighting technology has already been widely applied.

When introducing LED technology to the Middle East market, one major challenge lighting companies face is that the market still lacks sufficient awareness of LED technology and its benefits, said van den berg.

He said: "We want to communicate with lighting designers to help them understand the benefits that LED technology brings, as well as the issues they need to be concerned about if they adopt LED technology."

van den berg explained: "LED technology offers many product choices, and you must make the right choice for the application. I think this will be an arduous task in the coming years. We need to explain to customers why they should abandon incandescent and halogen lamps and choose LED."

He pointed out that a 60W incandescent lamp can be replaced by a 10W to 12W LED lamp. Similarly, a 40W to 50W halogen lamp can also be replaced by a 10W LED lamp.

van den berg concluded: "It is gratifying that LED technology is still developing and is expected to achieve higher efficiency. We expect efficiency to double within the next four to five years."
