Shandong Jianzhu University: Smart Lighting - Lights Out When People Leave
"Under normal usage conditions, the 7,111 fluorescent tubes in 160 classrooms of the school consume approximately 120,000 kWh per month. After installing the energy-saving device invented by Professor Zhao Xuzhen, the monthly consumption dropped to 34,000 kWh, saving 53,000 yuan in electricity bills each month!" Recently, Shandong Jianzhu University has fully utilized this technological invention to turn off classroom lights when people leave, which is no longer new at the school.
According to reports, the system that turns off classroom lights when people leave is based on a patented invention by Professor Zhao Xuzhen of the university's intelligent building discipline. While constructing new teaching buildings, the school gradually implemented automatic switching and dimming functions for classroom lighting. The core component enabling this intelligent adjustment is a human body sensor, which can detect the number and distribution of students in the classroom—lights turn on when people arrive, turn off when they leave; more tubes light up when many people are present, fewer when there are few; and lights automatically switch off when there is sufficient natural light. The full name of this remarkable energy-saving device is the "Building Lighting and Electrical Equipment Energy-Saving Control System," and its technology has reached an internationally advanced level. Currently, the smart lighting control system has been deployed in the school's library and main teaching buildings. Beyond classroom lighting, Shandong Jianzhu University has also widely applied this human body sensor smart control system to indoor air conditioning, water pipe regulation, and other areas, comprehensively controlling energy consumption and water waste.
In addition to saving electricity, water conservation and recycling are also important components of Shandong Jianzhu University's efforts to build a conservation-oriented campus using modern technology. The school has established a reclaimed water treatment station. Currently, on the 2,500-acre campus of Shandong Jianzhu University, 90% of the greening sprinkler irrigation and all road cleaning use reclaimed water; within the 400,000 square meters of buildings, reclaimed water is used for toilet flushing and cleaning; and the artificial lake is also replenished with reclaimed water. According to statistics, the school's daily reclaimed water utilization reaches 2,300 to 2,500 cubic meters, fully achieving zero sewage discharge.
Shandong Jianzhu University has also fully leveraged the research achievements of its architectural technology discipline in solar energy technology, building a 2,300-square-meter ecological student apartment that employs a comprehensive solar energy utilization system to meet the energy demands of air conditioning, ventilation, hot water, and public lighting. Compared with conventional buildings, this ecological apartment can not only save 75% of energy consumption but also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 175 tons per year.
On the basis of fully utilizing technological inventions for energy conservation and emission reduction and advocating a green, low-carbon lifestyle, Shandong Jianzhu University has also established a campus energy consumption monitoring platform, bringing power supply, water supply, reclaimed water, heating, and solar energy applications all within the monitoring scope, achieving real-time monitoring and control of every node. Building a conservation-oriented campus is no longer just a slogan at Shandong Jianzhu University.
