Another Practice of the "Lighting as a Service" Model — Partners Are Oil Services Giants Halliburton and Zumtobel

The "Lighting as a Service" model has recently gained another major endorsement, as global oil and gas services giant Halliburton will use this model to upgrade the lighting systems at six of its locations in the UK.

The "Lighting as a Service" model is provided by Austrian lighting group Zumtobel. Zumtobel will retrofit traditional lighting for Halliburton and integrate new LED solutions. The solution will meet current needs and further fulfill future lighting requirements in terms of quality and efficiency. Halliburton rents the luminaires from Zumtobel, with all installation and ongoing maintenance provided by Zumtobel, and the savings achieved by adopting the new lighting solutions fund the upgrades.

Founded in 1919, Halliburton Company is an American multinational and one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the energy industry, with approximately 50,000 employees and operations in around 70 countries. To reduce costs and energy emissions, the company evaluated its lighting strategy.

Previously, the company's lighting management was carried out sporadically by on-site teams, with minimal results in terms of cost savings or energy reduction. After recently outsourcing facility management to the UK, the company began exploring how to benefit more from third-party management. Lighting was an obvious area for improvement.

Halliburton will first start from Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth in the UK, renting lighting at these locations.

The company said it hopes to reduce energy consumption by 65% by upgrading to LED, and achieve conversion of 6 locations within 10 years, saving £1.8 million (approximately €2 million, US$2.35 million, or CNY 15.8 million) in costs.

Halliburton Regional Real Estate Manager Tim Wright said: "We hope to eliminate blind spots caused by insufficient lighting, and we want to better control when and where lighting is turned on, lighting on demand." "We also want to improve efficiency and improve the working environment," he said.

A series of advanced LED fixtures have been adopted throughout the warehouse and building, with full control functions such as automatic detection of lighting conditions, including daylight harvesting, which can switch fixtures to 10% output when there is no daylight. Specifically, CRAFT industrial fixtures combine low power consumption and low maintenance needs, providing consistent lighting levels throughout their service life, with the switch between natural and artificial light virtually imperceptible. Improved brightness helps reduce error rates and ensures that employees can work comfortably and proficiently.

The solution also includes the use of smart sensors throughout the office and circulation areas to further improve efficiency.

Tim Wright concluded: "Energy and cost savings are significant, but this measure will also have a beneficial impact on health, safety and work quality. Our factories in Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth are now nearing completion, and other factories are being evaluated and proposed."

In fact, the concept of "Lighting as a Service" was first introduced by Philips Lighting (now "Signify"), with the taglines "Don't sell light bulbs, sell light" and "Product as a Service", which can be considered a valuable innovation, subsequently explored and put into practice. A few years ago, Schiphol Group, Cofely, and Philips had already cooperated to provide new lighting for the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport terminal. Under the "Lighting as a Service" model, Schiphol pays a fee for the use of the lighting, while Philips retains ownership of the lighting equipment and handles all management, maintenance, and repairs during the contract period.
