Magnificent! This LED technology has won the National Technology Invention Second Prize
The 2016 Annual Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in Beijing on January 9. Two recipients were selected for the National Supreme Science and Technology Award: Academician Zhao Zhongxian from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Researcher Tu Youyou from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Tu Youyou is the first female laureate of the Supreme Award and also the first non-academician. Zhao Zhongxian is the first person born after the 1940s to win the Supreme Award.

The conference also announced:

It is worth mentioning that, following the "Silicon-substrate high-luminous-efficiency GaN-based blue light-emitting diode" winning the 2015 National Technology Invention First Prize, another technology in the semiconductor lighting industry has received an award. The "Multi-interface light-thermal coupling white LED packaging optimization technology" has won the National Technology Invention Second Prize.

This technology was developed by Professor Liu Sheng of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Luo Xiaobing of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Chen Mingxiang of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Pei Xiaoming of Shenzhen Refond Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., and Wang Kai of Guangdong Zhaoxin Enterprise Group Co., Ltd.
The emergence of multi-interface optical-thermal coupling white LED packaging optimization technology has broken through a series of technical bottlenecks in basic technologies, materials and processes involved in LED packaging. The project results have completely independent intellectual property rights, forming a complete LED packaging technology system from basic research, technical development to engineering application, and have been promoted and applied in LED enterprises such as Shenzhen Refond Optoelectronics, Guangdong Zhaoxin Group, and Wuhan Diguang Electronics: LED tunnel lights are widely used in national key engineering projects, having participated in the lighting engineering construction of the Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Subsea Tunnel (with a total length of 7,800 meters), the longest subsea tunnel in China; LED backlight modules are applied to TV and monitor manufacturers such as Konka, TCL, and Top Victory, with products exported in batches to the European Union, India and other countries and regions.
Semiconductor lighting is a national strategic emerging industry, which is of great significance for energy conservation and environmental protection. China is a major global producer and user of semiconductor lighting products. LED advanced manufacturing technology has been listed as a development priority in the "12th Five-Year Plan." Due to historical reasons, LED chips and key raw materials almost entirely depend on imports. Only packaging technology has become the final breakthrough for China's semiconductor lighting industry to break foreign monopoly and emerge from difficulties. However, LED packaging involves multiple materials, multi-step processes, multi-energy domains (light, heat, electricity, mechanics and chemistry, etc.), and multiple surface/interface interactions, with many constraints, making it difficult to achieve multi-objective optimization (low thermal resistance, high light efficiency, high lighting quality, etc.). There is an urgent need to independently carry out systematic invention and creation, breaking through a series of technical bottlenecks in basic technologies, materials and processes involved in LED packaging.
