  In recent years, the global energy crisis has become increasingly severe. The ecological environment and climate change have become the greatest challenges facing human society. Green development, marked by energy conservation, emission reduction, and environmental protection, has become the mainstream, and the development and application of new energy sources has become increasingly urgent. Solar photovoltaic lighting, with its unique advantages of being clean, pollution-free, and not requiring external power cables, has developed rapidly around the world.
  LEDs have the characteristics of low power consumption, no pollution, long lifespan, rich colors, vibration resistance, and strong controllability, and have now established their leading position in the transformation of the lighting industry. With the continuous improvement of LED technology and the rapid decline in costs, China's LED lighting application market has gradually opened up. By 2013, China's "National Semiconductor Lighting Project" had been launched for 10 years, technological breakthroughs have continuously driven costs down, and the LED lighting market is accelerating its penetration. It is expected that in the next few years, China's LED lighting industry will usher in a golden period of development.
  Solar photovoltaic LED lighting further perfectly combines the advantages of LED technology and solar energy, and will form greener lighting products that are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, with higher energy utilization efficiency and more convenient installation. The future market prospects are extremely broad.
  China is extremely rich in solar energy resources. The development of the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry and the LED lighting industry has attracted widespread attention from the government and the public. The industry is eager to gain in-depth insights into solar PV lighting and LED technologies, to comprehensively master technology applications, and to develop a multifaceted understanding of the industry's development environment and market trends.
  Against this backdrop, the "2014 Seminar on Solar PV Lighting Technology and Applications," jointly organized by the New Energy Lighting Committee under the China Illuminating Engineering Society and the China Renewable Energy Society, together with the Electric Light Source Committee of the China Illuminating Engineering Society, was successfully held in Beijing on July 15. The meeting specially invited leaders from government decision-making and management departments, experts in solar PV lighting, experts in traditional lighting and storage batteries, heads of organizations engaged in the research, development, and promotion of new energy and solar lighting, as well as persons in charge of energy-saving departments in schools and residential property management companies, and energy management personnel of major power consumers—more than 50 attendees in total.
  The meeting conducted experience exchanges on topics including the technical difficulties currently facing China's solar PV industry, the challenges confronting enterprises, research on industry direction, as well as the application markets and technologies for solar energy in schools and residential property management. Experts and senior corporate executives attending the meeting delivered brilliant speeches covering topics such as distributed PV power generation systems and their integration with new light sources, the development of solar LED lighting technology and applications in China, and the current status and development trends of China's lighting industry.
  In new energy lighting, besides LED, electrodeless fluorescent lamps, new high-pressure sodium lamps, ceramic metal halide lamps, and new lithium batteries have made significant technological advances in recent years, with good product performance, and are worthy of R&D and promotion. This seminar also attached importance to these developments.
  The seminar also scheduled an evening session, during which senior executives from front-line enterprises engaged in full exchanges and freely expressed their views. Representatives urgently hoped that the New Energy Committee would take the lead in formulating standards for solar PV lighting systems, putting an end to the current chaotic situation as soon as possible, improving product quality, regulating market behavior, and providing guidance for the sound, orderly, and healthy development of the industry. They also hoped that the New Energy Committee would use the new energy website as a platform to integrate production, education, and research, better serve enterprises, provide them with more and better opportunities for exchange, and thereby promote the high-level and sustainable development of solar PV lighting applications.
