Thick-shell quantum dot technology boosts semiconductor brightness 100 times

Quantum Materials and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) recently released the optional Thick-Shell 'Giant quantum dot technology for quantum materials, which is 10—100 times higher than traditional nanocrystal quantum dots in enhancing semiconductor lighting brightness. High brightness can improve material use efficiency and enhance the performance of displays and LED lighting.

When quantum dots emit light instantaneously, "Blinking" problems occur, which is usually a challenge for some quantum dot applications. LANL discovered that by better separating absorption through the shell, thick-shell quantum dots can significantly reduce fluorescence intermittency, and through core emission, the blinking problem is significantly suppressed (as shown in the figure).

Thick-shell technology can extend the service life of quantum dots at higher temperatures and high light density, thereby extending the product life of QD LCD backlight displays, semiconductor lighting films and projection lighting. Moreover, this non-blinking quantum dot has higher light output and less heat generation, thus enabling new product development and optimized design.

LANL has also achieved progress in near-infrared luminescence of thick-shell "Giant" QDs, which will impact medical imaging applications, optoelectronics, lasers, telecommunications, and solar photovoltaics. For example, target cancer cells can be more easily identified and tracked, while the variable absorption and luminescence ranges provide tailored performance for electronic and solar designs.

Quantum Materials plans to integrate LANL's thick-shell technology into its quantum dot production line. The company's automated process enables industrial-scale output while maintaining excellent consistency, thereby producing thick-shell quantum dots reliably and economically.
