On October 9, the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation issued a notice on the results of quality supervision spot checks conducted in 2025 for 13 types of products.

Among them, in the category of lighting sources and luminaires, three products were found to be non‑compliant during this round of inspections. The non‑conformities involved Harmonics / THD and External and Internal Wiring (safety standard items).

According to the notice, an “LED recessed spotlight” labeled as manufactured by Zhongshan Dengjia Lighting Co., Ltd. was deemed non‑compliant due to issues with its External and Internal Wiring and was sold on Douyin.

The main reasons for non‑compliance in this category include insufficient wire gauge, substandard insulation layers, and defective wire‑fixing structures. Prolonged use can easily lead to overheating and insulation breakdown, while installation or maintenance may result in broken conductors or exposed metal parts, posing risks of electric leakage and even fire.

In addition, two luminaires bearing the brand name Foshan Electrical Lighting Co., Ltd. were found to be non‑compliant in the Harmonics / THD test. Specifically, these included an LED ceiling light inspected by Beijing Jixingfan Technology Co., Ltd. (sold on JD.com) and an LED T70 cylindrical bulb inspected by Yuncheng District Yuechuang Decorative Lighting Store (a sole proprietorship), both dated or batch‑coded to 2024.

As a long-established, publicly listed company and a benchmark brand in China’s lighting industry, Foshan Lighting has now had two of its products flagged for non‑compliance due to excessive Harmonics / THD. This warrants close attention from the entire sector. Excessive harmonic currents can distort grid current, increase line losses, accelerate aging of electrical insulation, and—when used in large quantities—interfere with other appliances on the same circuit, potentially causing overheating and damage to wiring under severe conditions.

Harmonics / THD has become a frequent non‑compliance issue in nationwide luminaire inspections in recent years. Beyond Foshan Lighting, many leading brands have also been found to fail this test. Budget‑friendly mass‑market models and e‑commerce exclusive offerings carry significantly higher risks than high‑end project‑grade products. Some manufacturers, in an effort to cut costs, opt for low‑cost drivers in entry‑level, online‑driven, budget‑priced products. Although such fixtures may light up normally and appear visually fine, exceeding harmonic limits constitutes a typical hidden defect: “lights up but fails to meet standards.”

The Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation has ordered the manufacturers and sellers to cease production and sales of these non‑compliant products, and has entered the list of non‑compliant items into the supervision database. Relevant product information has also been recorded in the producers’ and operators’ quality‑credit files, enabling classified quality‑credit‑based regulation.

Furthermore, recently several lighting companies in Zhongshan have announced recall plans.

For example, Zhongshan Xidian Lighting Technology Co., Ltd. is recalling its “Xidian” brand Mingcan series ultra‑thin Downlight models manufactured on November 8, 2025, due to inadequate protection against electric shock.

Zhongshan Minghao Lighting Fixtures Co., Ltd. is recalling its “Meilaimiya” brand LED panel lights because their power cords do not meet required cross‑sectional area specifications.

Guangdong Kexun Lighting Electrical Shunde Branch is recalling its embedded LED luminaires, citing missing “Warning: Electric Shock Hazard” labels on lampshades and lamp bodies.

On October 9, the Zhongshan Municipal Market Supervision Bureau also issued a consumer warning: an embedded LED luminaire branded “Kundrui,” allegedly produced by Zhongshan Hengyu Lighting Appliance Factory, is suspected of having defects. However, since the manufacturer was deregistered in January 2026, a formal recall cannot be carried out; therefore, the bureau has instead issued a public consumer alert.

Against the backdrop of the lighting industry’s ongoing transformation, this wave of concentrated inspections and recalls sends a very clear signal: hidden EMC indicators like harmonics have become high‑frequency inspection targets under the new standards. For brands, ODM contract manufacturers, and supply‑chain procurement teams, selecting appropriate components for LED drivers, conducting incoming material inspections, and performing full EMC testing on finished products are no longer sufficient. Rigorous control over consistency across mass‑production batches—not just reliance on submitted samples—is the real key to managing risk.

Meanwhile, the repeated consumer warnings issued by Zhongshan-based manufacturers highlight another pressing issue in the industry: the low‑cost, asset‑light subcontracting model adopted by small factories makes product defects more likely. Going forward, channel partners, distributors, and project buyers should, when selecting products, not only verify CCC certification but also assess the factory’s ongoing quality‑control capabilities, rather than basing their choices solely on price.
