Effective in November! Key points of the "New Standard for Classroom Lighting and Illumination in Primary and Secondary Schools" (National standard (mandatory / recommended) 7793-2025)
GB 7793-2025 “Hygiene Standard for Daylighting and Lighting in Primary and Secondary School Classrooms” officially came into effect on November 1 this year, replacing the previous GB 7793-2010 standard. This standard applies to all regular classrooms as well as various specialized classrooms and public teaching spaces in ordinary primary and secondary schools and secondary vocational schools; off-campus training institutions shall follow this standard by reference. It serves as the core authoritative basis for ensuring compliance with campus lighting environments and preventing myopia among students.

01 Core Changes in the New National Standard
This new edition of the national standard has achieved a comprehensive upgrade, shifting from “meeting basic lighting requirements” to “scientific eye protection and myopia prevention.”
The evaluation logic has been upgraded: no longer assessing luminance alone, but focusing on eye protection and myopia prevention;
New indicators for visual health management have been added, including glare, blue light, flicker, and color temperature;
Standards for the use of LED luminaires in schools have been standardized, achieving full coverage of lighting environment standards across all teaching spaces.
02 Mandatory Hard Standards Schools Must Adhere To Regarding Natural Daylighting
Daylighting direction: When using single-side daylighting, light should enter from the student’s left side to avoid blocking writing with the right hand.
Classrooms must be equipped with blackout curtains to prevent direct sunlight and reflections.
Window-to-floor area ratio (Jiangsu belongs to Climate Zone III): ≥1:5
New south-facing classrooms: On the winter solstice, full-window sunlight exposure must be no less than 2 hours.
Uniformity of side daylighting in regular classrooms: ≥0.5, etc.
Regarding Classroom Lighting
Classrooms should have artificial lighting, and luminaires must pass China’s mandatory product certification.
Exposed light sources are prohibited; luminaire height above the desk surface must be no less than 1.7m.
Maintained average illuminance on the writing surface: ≥300lx, with uniformity of illuminance: ≥0.7.
Writing boards (newly defined) must have local lighting fixtures providing maintained average illuminance: ≥500lx, uniformity: ≥0.8.
In regular classrooms used for multimedia teaching, the writing board lighting fixture must support independent dimming.
Hygiene requirements for lighting equipment: Color temperature: 3300K–5300K; cool white light that is neither yellowish nor glaring; Color rendering index Ra≥90 to accurately reproduce the true colors of books and blackboard notes; ceiling lights in classrooms must have a blue light hazard rating of RG0, while writing board local lighting fixtures must be RG0 or RG1 to prevent retinal damage, etc.
Warm Reminder from Health Supervision Authorities
According to relevant provisions of the Regulations on School Health Work, daylighting and lighting in school classrooms must comply with national hygiene standards, which constitutes a statutory duty that schools are required to fulfill.
We hereby remind all schools to conduct a comprehensive self-inspection and rectification of classroom daylighting and lighting, promptly replace non-compliant luminaires, complete facility upgrades and compliance renovations on schedule, and effectively strengthen the protective barrier for the visual health of young people.
