The LED market is facing significant headwinds. The current slump in the LED market is mainly due to price declines in LED TV backlights and lighting systems. This is due to inventory adjustments and an increasing number of backlight manufacturers entering the LED market, resulting in intensified competition. The latest research from IMS Research indicates that LED backlights used in consumer electronics such as flat-panel TVs and mobile phones are expected to grow only 2% this year, while the growth rate of the LED general lighting market is expected to reach 29%, making it the fastest-growing LED market. The latest "LED Supply and Demand Report" released by IMS Research predicts that the LED market has sustained growth capability. The company estimates that from 2010 to 2015, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of LED revenue will be as high as 36%, with LED revenue reaching $6.3 billion by 2015, compared to $1.75 billion in 2011.

Looking at the response of the industry as a whole, Chuck Swoboda, CEO of Cree, believes that the production of LED chips for LED backlights has increased significantly in recent years, which has put pressure on the rest of the LED market. Benefiting from the growing demand in the LED lighting market, Cree is currently gaining from this. Veeco, a company that provides R&D and manufacturing of LEDs, solar panels, hard drives and other related equipment, also benefits from the growing LED lighting market demand.
