Goertek invests $100 million indirectly in a globally renowned Micro LED company, betting on the smart glasses sector
Recently, Goertek Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Goertek") announced that its controlled subsidiary, Hong Kong Goertek Tech, intends to provide an interest-bearing loan with equity return rights of up to $100 million to Haylo Labs Limited (hereinafter referred to as "Haylo"), to be used for acquiring 100% of the equity of Plessey Semiconductors Limited (hereinafter referred to as "Plessey"), a leading UK-based Micro LED enterprise, and implementing capital increase.
Goertek emphasized that this investment will not have a significant impact on its current financial status. This move marks another key step by Goertek in the upstream of the AR/VR supply chain, aiming to break through the core display technology bottlenecks restricting the development of smart glasses.

According to the announcement, Haylo Labs will use this loan to complete the full acquisition of Plessey and increase its capital. The funds are specifically designated for purchasing Micro LED-related fixed assets and supplementing working capital.
It is worth noting that this loan includes an equity return clause: if Haylo or Plessey is acquired by a third party, sells core assets, or undergoes an IPO during the loan period, Hong Kong Goertek will receive 25% of the total transaction value or market value as profit sharing, in addition to recovering the principal and interest.
This design resembles a variant of "convertible bonds," granting Goertek potential equity intervention rights while reducing the risks of direct acquisition. Industry analysts suggest that this structured financing approach helps Goertek flexibly secure upstream technical resources amidst global supply chain constraints.
Goertek is a global leader in the manufacturing of precision components and smart hardware, specializing in acoustics, optics, and microelectronics. The company is a core supply chain partner for tech giants such as Apple and Meta, holding a significant share in the AR/VR device market. In 2024, Goertek's VR/AR shipments ranked among the top globally, but display technology has remained a pain point in the industry chain. As the next-generation display technology, Micro LED offers advantages such as high luminance, low power consumption, and miniaturization, making it an ideal solution for AR smart glasses.
Plessey is a semiconductor company headquartered in Plymouth, UK, focusing on the research and development of Micro LED display technology. It previously collaborated with global wearable giant Meta to develop AR micro-displays. Related reports indicate that in the first quarter of this year, Plessey announced the joint development with Meta of a red Micro LED display claimed to be "the brightest in the world" (with luminance up to 6 million nits), designed specifically for AR glasses.

Haylo is a company registered just this March, whose founder established WaveOptics, which received strategic investment from Goertek and was later acquired by social media giant Snap.Haylois positioned as a technology investment platform, acting as an intermediary in this transaction.
Through this transaction, Goertek indirectly obtains Plessey's Micro LED Patents and technical team, filling its shortcomings in the display module sector.
Micro LED technology is becoming a fiercely contested battleground in the AR/VR industry. Traditional OLED and LCD applications in AR glasses are limited by power consumption and resolution, whereas Micro LED, as the next-generation display technology, enables pixel-level miniaturization, supporting higher luminance and lower latency, making it suitable for outdoor use and long-duration wearing scenarios. Market research firms predict that by 2030, the global Micro LED market size will exceed US$50 billion, with AR/VR applications accounting for more than 40%.
Goertek's core strategic intent in this investment is clear: to master the core technology of Micro LED micro-displays, bridge the "last mile" of AR/VR display technology, strengthen its integration capabilities in the upstream supply chain, forming a complete technical chain from upstream components to end products, and deepening strategic cooperation with leading customers.

Despite the broad prospects, Goertek's investment also faces risks and challenges that cannot be ignored. Although Micro LED technology is highly anticipated, issues such as difficult mass production and high costs remain common challenges across the industry.
