Congratulations! Dr. Zhang Wei has been appointed to the International Commission on Illumination

Recently, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) confirmed the appointment plan for the new directors of its six sub-divisions. Dr. Zhang Wei, Secretary-General of SAC/TC 224 (National Committee for Standardization of Lighting and Electrical Appliances), has been appointed as Director of CIE Sub-division 6 , with a term from September 2023 to September 2027.

The CIE has six divisions corresponding to the following professional fields: Vision and Color (Division I); Physical Measurement of Light and Radiation (Division II); Indoor Environment and Lighting Design (Division III); Traffic and External Applications (Division IV); Photobiology and Photochemistry (Division VI); Imaging and Image Processing Technology (Division VIII). The CIE Division VI is responsible for the field of photobiology and photochemistry, which is closely related to current key development directions in the lighting industry such as photobiological safety, non-visual biological effects of light, healthy lighting, agricultural lighting, ultraviolet radiation, and educational lighting. A Chinese expert was invited by the CIE and, after a voting process, assumed the role of Director of Division VI. This not only demonstrates that China's influence in the international lighting standardization field has been further enhanced, but also provides a more proactive and effective pathway for China's lighting industry to participate in technical research and contribute to areas such as healthy lighting, agricultural lighting, and non-visual biological effects.

To date, several Chinese experts in the lighting industry have served in international lighting standardization organizations.

Professor Hao Luoxi from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University, currently Deputy Director of SAC/TC224, has served as Vice President of CIE since 2018; Dr. Zhang Wei from Beijing Electric Light Source Research Institute Co., Ltd./National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Electric Light Sources (Beijing), currently Secretary-General of SAC/TC 224, has served as Chairman of IEC/TC 34/SC 34B since 2021 and is about to become Director of CIE Division 6; Dr. Wei Minchen from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will serve as Vice President of CIE starting in 2023 .
