In 2022, China's lighting industry export total reached USD 62.7 billion, a year-on-year (YoY) decrease of 4.2%. Overall, despite numerous adverse external factors, the lighting industry maintained a stable export scale last year, further highlighting China's important position in the global lighting Industry and demonstrating clear advantages in the Industry / Supply chain.

We have compiled the export situation of the lighting industry in 2022, classified and analyzed lighting products under 59 tariff codes. The relevant analysis reports will be successively released to the industry via the China Lighting Association's official WeChat account and the association's journal; China Light Network will also timely repost and publish them. Practitioners who wish to learn more about export information can follow the official WeChat accounts of the China Lighting Association and China Light Network.

This article briefly introduces the export situation of electric light sources and related products in 2022; a more detailed analysis will be published in the second issue of the China Association of Lighting Industry's journal, "China Lighting".

Main reasons for the decline in exports of electric light source products: First, the market share of integrated luminaires continues to rise, leading to a contraction in demand for replacement-type electric light source products and a sustained decrease in export volumes; Second, the impact of high inventory levels from the previous year on orders; Third, order transfers caused by production capacity overflow.

Export values for all major general-purpose electric light source products in 2022 declined, with decreases ranging from 2% to 36%. Among them, the largest decline was for HID lamps, with export value of approximately $120 million, a year-on-year (YoY) decrease of 36%; the largest increase was for ultraviolet lamp tubes, infrared bulbs, arc lamps, etc., with export value of approximately $560 million, a year-on-year (YoY) increase of over 50%.

In 2022, except for discharge lamp tubes whose export unit price decreased slightly by 2%, the export unit prices of all electric light source products increased, with the increase ranging from 9% to 101%. The largest increase was seen in tungsten halogen lamp products, whose export unit price doubled year-on-year. The unit price increase for LED lamp tubes and light bulb products was close to 15%.

With the policy dividends of the RCEP agreement gradually being released, China's lighting product exports have performed brightly in emerging markets such as the RCEP region , growing rapidly and partially offsetting the negative impact caused by sluggish growth in European and American markets. In 2022, the value of electric light source products and their accessories exported to RCEP countries exceeded USD 1.7 billion, accounting for approximately 20% of total electric light source exports, with a year-on-year increase of about 15%. The value of electric light source products and their accessories exported to other countries and regions grew by 7.8% year-on-year, accounting for approximately 30% of total electric light source exports.

I. Main LED light source export destination status

Light-emitting diode (LED) light bulb exports totaled approximately 5.13 billion units, a year-on-year decrease of 18.5%. The top five export destinations were the United States, Vietnam, Russia, Brazil, and Indonesia, accounting for about 44% of LED light bulb exports.

Light-emitting diode (LED) tube exports totaled approximately 580 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 2.8%. The top five export destinations were the United States, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brazil, and Hong Kong, China, accounting for about 42% of light-emitting diode (LED) tube exports. The Saudi Arabian market showed significant growth, with a year-on-year increase of 81%.

The total export volume of Light-emitting diode (LED) modules is approximately 450 million units. The top five export destinations are India, Brazil, Russia, Turkey, and Iraq, accounting for about 50% of the total exports of Light-emitting diode (LED) modules. This data reflects to some extent the overflow of China's lighting production capacity.

II. Main Electric light source Export destination situation

Compact hot-cathode fluorescent lamp exports were approximately 210 million units, a year-on-year (YoY) decrease of 32%. The top five export destinations were Indonesia, France, the United States, Mexico, and South Korea, accounting for approximately 48% of compact hot-cathode fluorescent lamp exports. Among them, the French market showed significant growth, with a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 65%.

Other hot-cathode fluorescent lamps exports were about 200 million units, down 14.2% year-on-year (YoY). The top five export destinations were the United States, France, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, China, accounting for about 59% of other hot-cathode fluorescent lamp exports. Among them, the largest increase was in the French market, up 76% year-on-year (YoY).

III. Main Thermal Radiation Light Sources Export Destinations Situation

Incandescent lamps not elsewhere specified (power ≤200W, rated voltage >100V) export volume was approximately 1.08 billion units, a year-on-year (YoY) decrease of 15.7%. The top five export destinations were the United States, Mexico, Angola, Venezuela, and Vietnam, accounting for approximately 43% of the export volume of incandescent lamps not elsewhere specified (power ≤200W, rated voltage >100V).

Unspecified incandescent lamp exports amounted to approximately 540 million units, a year-on-year (YoY) decrease of 13.9%. The top five export destinations were Cambodia, the United States, Vietnam, Germany, and Japan, accounting for approximately 87% of unspecified incandescent lamp exports.
