Rice seeds harvested in space are back home!

According to reports, samples returned with "Shenzhou-14"

Includes 3 biological sample cold packs

and 1 containerless sample bag

Among them, inside the biological sample cold pack,

loaded with experimental samples of rice and Arabidopsis

underwent 120 days of space cultivation growth

Rice and Arabidopsis have completed

Seed germination, seedling growth,

the entire process of flowering and seed setting

This is also the first time internationally

the first completion of rice from seed to seed

Space Plants and Earth Plants

What is the difference between ?

By analyzing images obtained from the space

And comparing with the ground

Scientists have preliminarily seen

The effect of microgravity in on plants

Preliminary experiments have found that

(1) The plant architecture of rice has become more loose in space; dwarf rice varieties have become shorter, while the height of tall rice varieties was not significantly affected.

(2) Rice flowering time in space is slightly earlier than on the ground , but the grain-filling period has been extended by more than 10 days, and most glumes cannot close. Flowering time and glume closure play an important role in ensuring sufficient reproductive growth of plants and obtaining high-yield, high-quality seeds. Researchers will use returned samples for further analysis.

(3) Ratoon rice experiments were conducted in space and ratoon rice seeds were obtained; two rice panicles can regenerate from 20 days after cutting the stalks. Researchers believe this provides new ideas and experimental evidence for efficient production of space crops. This technology can greatly increase rice yield per unit volume, and it is also the first attempt at ratoon rice technology in space internationally.

(4) In addition, Arabidopsis successfully bloomed in space. Researchers conducted the first study on key genes regulating photoperiodic flowering via the circadian clock in space . The follow-up research team will further utilize the returned materials to deeply analyze the molecular basis of Arabidopsis adaptation to the space environment.
