International Energy Agency releases report "Smart Lighting - New Features Affecting Energy Consumption"
Recently, the International Energy Agency's End-Use Equipment Semiconductor Lighting Technology Collaboration Programme released a research report titled "Smart Lighting - New Features Affecting Energy Consumption". The report highlights various energy consumption tests conducted on smart lighting and provides a comprehensive overview of its characteristics based on actual test data. It offers several recommendations to policymakers, lighting product manufacturers, and other stakeholders to fully leverage the energy-saving potential of smart lighting products.

The report introduces smart lighting features that affect energy consumption in seven sections, with the main content including:
Smart lighting product testing guidelines and test procedures.
Standby Power Analysis (data from tests on 236 smart lamps/luminaires from 67 manufacturers during 2015-2020).
Analysis of the impact of dimming and color tuning on luminous efficacy and luminous flux.
Standby power issues when products become more complex due to added features.
Assessment of barriers in the smart lighting market, including user-friendliness, interoperability, consistency, system openness, standards, and connectivity and interoperability with existing wired control systems.
The report proposes the following recommendations:

It is recommended to use overall efficacy as a metric for data analysis and comparison of smart lighting products.
It is recommended that manufacturers provide gateway energy consumption information for their products and actively reduce gateway energy consumption. Future regulations may include provisions for maximum gateway power limits.
Manufacturers are advised to provide the luminous flux, power, and efficacy of products in warm color (color temperature 2700 K) and cool color (color temperature 4000 K or 5000 K) on packaging and online information; for online sales, the color temperature range must be indicated where the product's luminous flux is less than 70% of the product's maximum luminous flux.
Smart lighting manufacturers provide rated information on luminous flux, power, and efficacy of products at different dimming levels (75%, 50%, and 25% light output at the factory default color temperature).
It is recommended that regulatory authorities require manufacturers to provide switches for non-lighting functions to reduce energy consumption from unnecessary features.
