Are LED strips "universal"?
Are LED strips all-purpose? Don't rush to doubt; let me explain in detail.
A few days ago, Shenzhen Guangshengde Company was scheduled to hold the launch event for its 'Chip-Level Flexible LED Strip Packaging Intelligent Production Line' in the afternoon, and cordially invited me to attend and speak. What should I talk about? After thinking it over, I summarized it into seven characteristics of LED strips:
1. LED strip, the perfect combination of light source and Luminaire]]. Traditional lighting has always been clearly separated: lights are lights, luminaires are luminaires. But the LED strip unites both, nicknamed "two-in-one". Is it possible to further bond with building materials? Would this not pave the way for a "three-in-one" solution, like adhesive tape—just stick it on and it lights up?
2. LED strip lights are the best 'secondary alternative' product after removing main lighting (to be modest). In recent years, the trend of eliminating main lighting has grown stronger. Even in Guzhen, a region known for decorative lighting as its major product, public sentiment has followed this shift toward removing main lights. Now, everyone in the lighting industry is smart; they no longer stick to rigid thinking but instead react quickly to market trends. Without main lights, recessed or spotlights may be insufficient, so LED strips fill the gap—this is largely how indoor decoration works nowadays.
3, LED strips are now the main lights (said proudly)! With a significant increase in chip luminance, upgrading LED strips to become main lighting is becoming a reality. Designers, especially emerging ones, favor the aesthetic of smooth linear forms. Some trendier designers deliberately avoid recessed spotlights, which create either large or small circular holes that merely reveal light. Instead, they excel at using straight, direct linear light that harmonizes perfectly with building materials, creating a unique lighting environment. In fact, several years ago, I proposed a term: "Active-grade LED strips" (Mr. C created a PPT on this). Today, it seems my words have come true! This once again confirms that although I am a latecomer to lighting, I also possess "hindsight".
4, LED strips can be used both indoors and outdoors. One night, after being warmly hosted by a friend in Taicang, Jiangsu, I rushed to Kunshan, Suzhou. It was pitch dark, and the "East City Avenue" was under construction, with potholes all along the way. Fortunately, LED strips guided us for over 10 kilometers, feeling almost "endless"! Xiao Lei, the owner of an LED strip manufacturer in Guzhen, told me their strips are customizable to any size. From this perspective, aren't they truly Environmental protection LED strips? Every bit is put to good use; nothing is wasted at all.
5, LED strips, compared to Christmas LED string lights, can be called an upgraded version of CSP strips. In terms of price, they are temporarily slightly inferior, but in terms of performance ratio, they are slightly superior. Besides being cuttable at will, they can also be bent softly, and dimming and color tuning are possible. Due to their high quality and good looks, they can be reused in "Smart Change, Ten Thousand Wisdoms". I believe that CSP strips will light up the world like MLS Christmas lights, of course, this still needs the brand endorsement of LEDVANCE.
6, LED strips, the presentation form is diverse. There are rigid LED strips; besides being durable against impacts, they exhibit a kind of rigid beauty. Angular and crisp,舒展 and structured, as seen on the ancient city walls of Xi'an. There are also flexible LED strips, sold directly in rolls, facilitating inventory and logistics. More importantly, once flexible, they allow for countless combinations. Long, round, curved—any shape, any combination; the only limit is imagination, not feasibility! Mr. Li from Chengdu Lanjing Company has the ability to make it happen.
7. LED strips also come in various packaging forms, mostly SMD or COB. Today, the most iteratively innovative is CSP, once known as the "unpackaged device." Previously limited by process constraints with a defect rate of 2‰, it has now earned a "breakthrough award." Its CSP strip technology goes far beyond lighting; it can be scaled to TV backlighting. Perhaps soon, CSP may surpass Micro in TV adoption—a prospect that is just around the corner.
Admittedly, it is unrealistic for light strips to be universally applicable immediately; this is a gradual process requiring the integration of more industry peers or friends from cross-disciplinary fields. Quoting Lu Xun: "There was originally no path on the ground; when many people walk, a path emerges." By analogy: "Light strips were not originally universal; as more people adopt them, they become universal!"
