Shanghai achieved full coverage of LED luminaires for road lighting across the city by 2023

Road lighting luminaires in Shanghai are undergoing energy-saving retrofitting. Reporters learned that Shanghai will basically achieve full coverage of LED road lighting luminaires citywide by 2023. After the retrofit, the city will save approximately 350 million kWh of electricity annually; based on the equivalence of 3,000 kWh to 1 ton of standard coal, this equals an annual saving of 117,000 tons of standard coal and a reduction of 350,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

据统计，上海道路照明设施总数约82.54万盏，年用电量约7.8亿度。其中约70.14万盏光源是高压钠灯，占总数的85%。“高压钠灯相比于新型的LED光源存在耗能高、使用寿命短、显色指数低、光效昏暗等缺点。”市综管中心照明科尹伟告诉记者，存量的高压钠灯大多数超过了使用年限，近几年上海新建道路照明设施均采用LED灯具。

According to the "Three-Year Action Plan for Promoting Energy-Saving Retrofit of Road Lighting Facilities in Shanghai (2021-2023)", Shanghai plans to replace approximately 701,400 LED luminaires over three years , including 18,000 units replaced alongside overhead line undergrounding and pole cabinet rectification , basically achieving full coverage of LED luminaires for road lighting across the city. Meanwhile, improve the road lighting facility management information platform, enhance the intelligent remote control system for road lighting , and establish an energy consumption assessment mechanism for road lighting.

Yin Wei stated that in June this year, the Municipal Comprehensive Management Center carried out LED luminaire retrofit pilot projects on 75 luminaires near the Junghong Road section of the Yixian Road Elevated Road and 63 luminaires near the Haijiang Road section of the Tongji Road Elevated Road. They conducted illuminance testing to evaluate the retrofit effects and commissioned single-lamp intelligent control systems, thereby launching project pilots to advance large-scale citywide retrofits.

In 2022, Shanghai will complete the replacement of approximately 250,000 LED luminaires, finishing the retrofitting of lighting facilities on all elevated expressways, river-crossing bridges and tunnels, underpasses, and municipal-managed roads. The renovation of district-managed lighting facilities will reach at least 25% of the total facilities within each district.

Reporters learned that after the three-year renovation is completed, Shanghai's road lighting lamps not only show significant energy saving and emission reduction effects but also reduce maintenance costs and improve road lighting quality.

"The service life of new LED luminaires is 4-6 times that of high-pressure sodium lamps, which can effectively reduce the failure rate of road lighting, decrease the repair request rate and complaint rate for road lighting. At the same time, the Color rendering index (CRI) of new LED luminaires is 3-4 times that of high-pressure sodium lamps, which can effectively improve visual clarity, enhance road traffic safety, and reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents." said Yin Wei.
