Growing vegetables with carbon dioxide! The Shuimu Mengdian Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Plant is very "hardcore"

The 2022 National Energy Saving Publicity Week was held from June 13 to 19, with the theme "Green and Low-Carbon, Energy Saving First". The National Low-Carbon Day was on June 15, with the theme "Implementing 'Dual Carbon' Actions, Building a Beautiful Home Together".

To extensively promote education on energy saving and carbon reduction, and vigorously advocate green, low-carbon production and lifestyles, China Light Network, Agricultural Lighting Network, and Ming Classroom jointly call for submissions of energy-saving and low-carbon technology and project cases from lighting enterprises and user organizations. The submission case we are publishing in this issue is the Shuimu Mengdian Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Factory Project.

Project Introduction

The Shuimu Mengdian Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Factory Project is a major "Three Batches" project approved by the Henan Provincial Development and Reform Commission in 2021. It is jointly invested and constructed by Henan Mengdian Group and Beijing Shuimu Jiutian Technology Co., Ltd., a modern agricultural enterprise with Tsinghua University background. The two parties established Shuimu Mengdian Carbon-Rich Agriculture Technology Company as the implementing entity, combining the waste heat and carbon dioxide generated by Mengdian Group's thermal power generation with Shuimu's vegetable factory. By utilizing crop photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is fixed into organic matter, achieving agricultural carbon neutrality.

Energy saving and carbon reduction technology, effects

Phase I of the Shuimu Mengdian Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Factory Project covers an area of 55 mu, with an investment of 210 million yuan. The project is divided into four parts: the Carbon-Rich Technology Innovation Center, the Carbon-Rich Vegetable Factory, the Energy Island, and the Microalgae Factory.

Carbon dioxide and waste heat generated by thermal power plants are processed by the "Energy Island" before entering the vegetable factory, where they are converted into nutrients that enhance plant yield and quality. This significantly boosts production while achieving agricultural carbon sequestration and reduction. The facility achieves year-round continuous production through intelligent and precise control of water, light, air, fertilizer, and heat. The output of tomatoes and cucumbers is 50 times that of open-field farming, with an average annual output value exceeding 500,000 yuan per mu. The comprehensive benefits of carbon sequestration and reduction far exceed those of forests.

According to Wang Xiaoqing, General Manager of Henan Shuimu Mengdian Carbon-Rich Agriculture Technology Co., Ltd., the carbon sequestration achieved on one mu of land here is equivalent to that of 22.5 mu of primitive forest in southern China, allowing for economic development while enhancing ecological integrity.

Producing crops using carbon dioxide not only transforms the traditional agriculture model that depends on weather conditions, exploring a green, low-carbon, circular and regenerative agricultural production method, but also leverages technological means to unlock the growth potential of crops, achieving high yields and superior quality. Wang Xiaoqing told reporters: "We utilize the heat from the factory to raise temperatures in winter and lower them in summer, enabling continuous year-round production. With higher planting density, its yield is more than 50 times greater than that of open-field farming."

Mengzhuang Town in Huixian City, where the Shuimu Mengdian Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Factory project is located, is a traditional industrial hub. Against the backdrop of "carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality," many enterprises face challenges in transformation and upgrading. The commencement of construction of the Shuimu Mengdian Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Factory project represents a new local attempt to deeply integrate industry with agriculture and effectively combine the dual-carbon strategy with rural revitalization.
