Continue divestment! ams OSRAM sells this business for €65 million!

Global leader in optical solutions, ams OSRAM, has recently announced an agreement to sell its independent and dedicated AMLS (Automotive Lighting Systems GmbH, Automotive Lighting Systems) business to automotive parts supplier Plastic Omnium (Euronext: POM, Plastic Omnium) for €65 million (approximately RMB 450 million).


ams OSRAM stated that this transaction represents another step in implementing the strategy previously communicated by ams OSRAM, which focuses on strategic core technologies and divesting non-strategic core businesses . ams OSRAM will remain the primary automotive LED and optical component supplier for Plastic Omnium. This transaction does not include other ams OSRAM technologies and products used for automotive OEM and the automotive aftermarket .


It is reported that ams OSRAM Automotive Lighting Systems GmbH was established on October 1, 2021, following the dissolution of the OSRAM joint venture in mainland China. AMLS is headquartered in Munich and is committed to combining lighting technology with electronics and software to develop intelligent and innovative full lighting systems for the automotive industry.


AMLS generated €148 million in revenue in 2021 and employs approximately 770 people across nine global locations. With Plastic Omnium, AMLS will join a world-renowned and rapidly growing Tier 1 automotive supplier group that employs 30,000 people and serves a global customer base. Plastic Omnium is headquartered in France with an annual revenue of €8 billion in 2021.

With its advanced product portfolio, strong expertise, balanced footprint, and high-quality team, this acquisition will enable Plastic Omnium to accelerate the implementation of its ambitious strategy to meet the increasing demand from OEM customers for smart automotive body components and is expected to open up new market segments," said Laurent Favre, CEO of Plastic Omnium.


ams OSRAM also stated that, as an industry leader in automotive optical solutions, the Group will continue to focus on the field of automotive optical components, providing innovative component products for automotive parts (covering the entire spectrum from visible to invisible light) including automotive lighting, as well as automotive sensing applications. These specific applications include interior monitoring systems, dynamic and static exterior lighting, RGB interior lighting, LiDAR for autonomous driving and ADAS, HUDs (Head-Up Displays), gesture sensing, etc.


In accordance with customary terms of sale, the transaction is expected to be completed in Q3 2022.


From last year to this year, ams OSRAM has successively divested its digital business, Fluence horticultural lighting business, and other operations, and the joint venture between OSRAM and Continental Group has also been dissolved.
