During the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, epidemic prevention work was crucial.

How are competition venue facilities and athletes' equipment disinfected? Let's follow R&D personnel to see several "epidemic prevention artifacts"

This is a 6-sided disinfection device located at the National Stadium. During the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, it provides rapid disinfection services for various equipment, items, and clothing used by participating athletes, technical officials, and media personnel, minimizing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

According to Chen Zhao, the person in charge of the project on key technologies for surface disinfection and intelligent application equipment, traditional disinfection methods mainly include two types: one is spraying chemical reagents, which is not suitable for some papers and electronic devices, and the process can produce stains. This device uses a multi-wavelength UV disinfection method, specifically deep ultraviolet light developed in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, achieving a disinfection rate of 99.99%.

In addition to large-scale fixed disinfection equipment, the R&D team of the 'Adaptive Surface Disinfection Key Technologies and Intelligent Application Equipment' project under the Tech Winter Olympics initiative has also developed a wide variety of intelligent prevention and control disinfection equipment.

Shi Jianping, head of the R&D team for key surface disinfection technologies and intelligent application equipment automation, stated: "The handheld security scanner I am holding now is designed to improve inspection efficiency and meet the CDC's requirement of one-check-one-disinfect. We have developed a dual-chamber handheld security scanner disinfection cabinet to rapidly disinfect handheld scanners and enhance inspection efficiency."

This light-emitting device mounted on the intelligent robot is the "epidemic prevention artifact," the excimer disinfection lamp. The excimer disinfection lamp can emit deep ultraviolet light with a central peak wavelength of 222 nanometers, efficiently disinfecting viruses, bacteria, and other pathogenic microorganisms present in the space where staff and athletes are located, without causing harm to the human body.

In the video, a smart disinfection robot is performing disinfection operations. It is reported that this smart disinfection robot integrates ultraviolet chip technology, intelligent control technology, multi-degree-of-freedom robotic arm technology, and binocular vision recognition technology. For complex object surfaces, it can adaptively recognize object shapes, plan disinfection trajectories, and achieve efficient and precise disinfection results.

During the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, over one hundred smart disinfection devices of various types will be deployed across the three competition zones to safeguard epidemic prevention and control.

Thoroughly disinfect venues and personnel without any blind spots; this is a 'must-answer question' for the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Ultraviolet disinfection and sterilization offers advantages such as simplicity, environmental protection, and excellent efficacy, which have been verified by experiments and facts, providing a strong protective umbrella against epidemics. In-depth research by UV-related technical personnel and breakthroughs in key technologies (such as regarding 222nm ultraviolet light, where the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists ACGIH recently released new documents revising its UV hazard function and dose limits) will effectively expand the application of UV products in air purification, surface disinfection of items, and water purification, while making UV sterilization applications safer.
