Youchang Lighting up the Opera Center • Illuminating World-Class Art

The Xiqu Centre, located on the eastern side of the West Kowloon Cultural District in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was completed in 2019. Covering an area of 28,000 square meters, it is Hong Kong's first world-class performance venue dedicated to traditional Chinese opera. Inspired by Chinese lanterns, the Xiqu Centre features open spaces for hosting public exhibitions, concerts, markets, opera demonstrations, and lectures.

New Image of the Traditional Art Center

Looking up at the 13-meter-high atrium, the large open atrium serves as the gateway to the Chinese Opera Centre. Above the entrance, aesthetically pleasing and practical recessed lighting is used, along with the Traxon Dynamic lighting system. The RGB lights, created by mixing red, green, and blue primary colors, can produce various dazzling light effects. As audiences walk through the curtain-like entrance, the slowly opening stage curtain reveals a shimmering silver facade. Its streamlined design resembles a brilliant galaxy in the night sky, complemented by ever-changing colorful light flows that spread across the view, creating a unique style and giving the traditional arts center a modern new image.

Blending traditional and modern elements

The Xiqu Centre was honored by TIME magazine as one of the "World's 100 Greatest Places of 2019." Its unique modern architecture embodies the charm of traditional Chinese opera culture, blending traditional and modern elements. Visitors can experience the traditional Hong Kong culture of "Yat Chung Leung Gin" (one cup of tea, two pieces of dim sum) at the teahouse theater, enjoying dim sum and tea while watching performances, making it ideal for those new to the art of Chinese opera.
