- Adjusted EBITDA margin for optoelectronic semiconductor business exceeds 31%

- Plans to find potential acquirers for the electronics and power supply business segment (DS, Digital Lighting Systems)

- Announces strategic investment in UVC LED company

Following a significant upward revision of its full-year performance guidance at the end of January, OSRAM officially released its Q1 2021 financial report (October to December 2020). The data shows that OSRAM achieved revenue of €840 million in the first quarter. Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) margin reached 19.3%, amounting to €162 million, representing a substantial 42% increase on a comparable basis. At the same time, the company generated a positive free cash flow of €50 million, reflecting a strong business growth trend.

OSRAMstated that profitability trends across all business segments are continuously improving, with the optoelectronic semiconductor segment performing particularly well, achieving a record high for adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization).

Olaf Berlien, CEO of OSRAM, stated: "Over the past year, OSRAM has implemented effective management measures to counter external crises, enabling us to develop逆势 despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our impressive achievements in the automotive business and optoelectronic semiconductor business serve as excellent proof. More notably, our production facility in Kulim, Malaysia, has provided strong support to meet market demand. Over the past three years, the Kulim production base has become a key pillar for OSRAM's optoelectronic semiconductors."

OSRAM Automotive Business (AM), Optoelectronic Semiconductor Business (OS), Digital Business (DI). All three business divisions achieved strong market performance in the first quarter of the new fiscal year. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, OSRAM's leading market position in the field of automotive retrofitting and replaceable lighting equipment continued to strengthen.

Automotive Business

Optoelectronic Semiconductor Business

Performance in the first quarter was particularly outstanding, with sales growing by nearly 5% to €356 million, and an adjusted EBITDA margin exceeding 31%, setting a new record high. These figures highlight the critical importance of focusing R&D and application efforts on high-end technology in both the automotive and general lighting sectors, as well as the significance of expanding production capacity in Kulim, Malaysia, and Regensburg, Germany, for future sustainable development.

Digital Business

The previously implemented performance improvement plan has yielded further results. Despite the impact of the pandemic, sales in the first quarter declined, but the adjusted EBITDA margin increased by €6 million quarter-on-quarter compared to the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year, resulting in positive free cash flow.

It is worth noting that OSRAM stated that over the past several months, the company has carefully evaluated various possibilities for the future development of its digital business. As OSRAM continues to focus on high-tech transformation in the field of optoelectronics, the company has decided to seek a potential acquirer for the electronics and power supply business segment under the digital business (DS, Digital Lighting Systems). As a leading technology supplier in the market, this business segment will have greater development space in its professional field in the future.

OSRAM stated that this counter-cyclical growth was also due to the frequent launch of new products by OSRAM to address public health crises. By expanding its product portfolio, OSRAM made a significant contribution to fighting the epidemic, especially with the recent launch of multiple sterilization products based on UVC light sources, which combine traditional and new LED technologies suitable for disinfecting air, water, objects, and environmental surfaces.

OSRAM announces strategic investment in UVC LED company

On the 18th, OSRAM announced that through its venture capital arm Fluxunit, it acquired approximately 20% of Bolb Inc., a deep ultraviolet LED supplier based in California, USA.

OSRAM stated that through this strategic investment, it will further expand its technology and product layout in the field of UVC sterilization applications. In the next two years, the two companies will collaborate in R&D to accelerate the industrialization of high-efficiency, high-performance UVC LEDs.

Unlike traditional UVC sterilization solutions, LED-based sterilization solutions require very little space and can be directly installed in everyday small-scale application scenarios such as faucets, washing machines, or ventilation systems. Space-saving disinfection solutions make an important contribution to fighting the coronavirus.

“OSRAM already has multiple UVC disinfection solutions, including LED and traditional light source technologies. The strategic investment in Bolb strengthens OSRAM's expertise and technology in the UVC LED field, positioning OSRAM as a leader in the non-visible light disinfection and sterilization market.” said Olaf Berlien, CEO of OSRAM Group.

Currently, most UVC sterilization applications rely on traditional light source technology based on mercury lamps. Compared with traditional light sources, UVC LED technology holds great potential to achieve high luminous efficacy while significantly reducing energy consumption. The strategic partnership between OSRAM and Bolb will overcome relevant technical barriers to deliver low-energy-consumption, high-efficacy results. It is reported that, thanks to the unique technical components used for UV-C LEDs, Bolb has successfully achieved excellent high luminous efficacy values, far surpassing other products on the market.
