Frankfurt Luminale Light Festival Cancelled

Following the postponement of the Frankfurt Light + Building exhibition to September due to the pandemic, the Frankfurt Luminale 2020 Light Festival, held concurrently with the exhibition, has also been cancelled.

Reports indicate that Messe Frankfurt and the Frankfurt Health Department have closely collaborated to decide on the immediate cancellation of the Luminale lighting festival. It was originally scheduled to take place from March 12 to 15 in Frankfurt and Offenbach.

Due to the current ban by health authorities on large events with more than 1,000 attendees, as the organizer of Luminale, Messe Frankfurt has decided to cancel this lighting festival in the near future. The unstable situation and dynamic spread of SARS-CoV-2, combined with the fact that the German Federal Centre for Disease Control (Robert Koch Institute) even advises against attending events with fewer than 1,000 people, led to this new decision.

Messe Frankfurt expressed deep regret over this short-term decision but stated that, out of responsibility for the health of participants and visitors, it had no choice but to proceed this way.

"Luminale" Lighting Festival is a project launched in 2002 by Messe Frankfurt in close collaboration with the Light + Building exhibition, held biennially. During this event, Frankfurt and the neighboring city of Offenbach radiate special light. Its purpose is to bring the exhibition's themes of lighting, design, and architecture into the heart of Frankfurt, building a bridge between the exhibition grounds and the city, allowing people to witness the illuminated Frankfurt and the Rhine riverbank every day after the exhibition closes.

Visitors from around the world can enjoy light shows in Frankfurt and the Rhine region, which feature multiple combinations of lighting, sound, and other media, showcasing numerous lighting art works created by designers, architects, lighting designers, and artists.
