Google demonstrates smart fabric that can be used to control phones and lighting fixtures
Beijing time, May 30 news, according to technology website PCWorld, Google demonstrated a piece of fabric woven from smart fibers at the I/O conference, which may be used in the future to control smartphones or lighting fixtures in the home.
Google's ATAP division (Advanced Technology and Projects) officially announced Project Jacquard. The project is one of Google's many novel and magical experimental projects. The project can "weave" electronic components into fibers, transforming the fabric into a touch screen, allowing users' fingers to slide on the fabric to control nearby electronic devices.

It is not yet clear how Google plans to utilize this technology developed by its Advanced Technology and Projects group. Google's 3D mapping technology Project Tango also originated from this division. Google announced Levi's as Project Jacquard's first partner on Friday, but did not reveal any specific 'smart clothing'.


Some videos on the Project Jacquard website show scenes of industrial weaving, suggesting Google may have solved the problem of mass-producing this fabric. Signs at the booth indicate that this fabric is being produced in textile factories in the United States and Japan. Carsten Schwesig, a Google executive working on Project Jacquard, said this technology can be applied to almost any fabric. Some yarn and silk threads hanging on the wall behind the booth may indicate that the technology will be used in woolen textiles and silk fabrics.
Schwesig said that Google and its partners have been developing this technology for approximately one year.
