Sichuan Primary and Secondary Schools Aim to Meet National Lighting Standards Within 3 Years

The Sichuan Provincial Department of Education and the Department of Health recently issued a joint document requiring all regions to improve hygiene conditions in primary and secondary schools to protect the vision of primary and secondary school students. Sichuan will strive to use 3 years to bring the lighting of teaching spaces and blackboards in primary and secondary schools across the province up to national standards, and will strive to use 3-5 years to make the myopia incidence rate of adolescent students in the province lower than both the 2010 Sichuan survey level and that year's national average. In 2010, a sample survey of the national student physical health research showed that the myopia rate among Han Chinese high school students aged 16-18 was 72.04%. Reporters learned that Sichuan Province has strict requirements for teaching hygiene conditions in primary and secondary schools. Whether elementary school, middle school, private, or public, all must comply with reference standards. Students must have one seat per person; the minimum distance between the front edge of the frontmost row of desks and the teaching blackboard should preferably be 2.5 meters; the maximum distance between the back edge of the last row of desks and the blackboard should preferably be 8 meters for elementary schools and 9 meters for middle schools. In addition, classroom windows should use colorless transparent glass.
