Seoul Semiconductor's 5x Brighter New LED Product 'nPola' Makes Its Debut

On July 3, 2012, the new LED product 'nPola' from internationally renowned LED specialist Seoul Semiconductor made its debut at the Plaza Hotel in Sogong-dong, Jongno-gu. The product employs core technology that is set to lead the next-generation lighting market.


The 'nPola' product unveiled that day is the result of more than 10 years of patented technology development by Seoul Semiconductor. Its distinguishing feature is the use of non-polar technology, which significantly improves luminous efficiency; compared with existing LEDs, it delivers 5 times the brightness on the same area.


Currently mass-produced LEDs have a luminous efficiency of around 100 lumens, while the 'nPola' product unveiled by Seoul Semiconductor reaches 500 lumens, five times that of current products. Simply put, when making an LED bulb to replace a 60W household bulb, 10 to 20 LEDs are typically used, but with 'nPola', the same brightness can be achieved with just 1 to 2 LEDs.

As LED products begin to be applied in the general lighting field, the lighting industry is expected to deliver significant energy savings. However, the relatively high cost of LED products has slowed the popularization of the LED lighting market. Through the successful mass production of the 'nPola' product, Seoul Semiconductor can drive the replacement of traditional lighting with LED lighting. The lighting market accounts for 20% of the world's electricity consumption, and Seoul Semiconductor will contribute to global energy-saving and emission-reduction efforts.

Lee Jung-hoon, the legal representative, stated, "For more than 20 years, we have focused solely on the field of LED. This new product can be said to be the essence of our core technology accumulated over more than 20 years," and that it is "the ultimate goal of LED light sources," expressing great confidence in the new product. Seoul Semiconductor will immediately begin production and plans to start sales focused on key overseas strategic points.

In addition, Professor Nakamura Shuji, known as the "Father of LED," attended the event that day and introduced the technological capabilities of Seoul Semiconductor. Professor Nakamura Shuji, who has long been nominated as a candidate for the Nobel Prize, currently holds a professorship at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the United States, and also serves as a consultant for Seoul Semiconductor. Professor Nakamura Shuji stated that "Seoul Semiconductor's technological capabilities and competitiveness are second to none in the international market," and expressed that "the LED product released today will open a brand new chapter in the lighting market."

In addition to the new product launch, the event that day also featured booths where attendees could personally experience Seoul Semiconductor's core products, including Acrich, UV, and white LEDs, which attracted considerable attention from participants.
