Signify installs Interact City smart connected road lighting system on the main highway of Gran Canaria
Global lighting leader Signify (Euronext Amsterdam ticker: LIGHT) has upgraded Gran Canaria's most important highway, GC-1, into a smart highway using its Interact City smart connected road lighting system. The Gran Canaria City Council upgraded the lighting system to LED light sources with a color temperature of 2700K to meet the Canary Islands Observatory's requirements for dark sky protection, preserve the island's biodiversity, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and carbon footprint, and ensure road safety and driving experience. The new road lighting system has received positive feedback from drivers.

The southern highway of Gran Canaria (GC-1) connects the capital Las Palmas, the international airport, and various attractions in the south of the island. This highway was equipped with Philips Traffic Vision street lights in 1990. As the lifecycle of these street lights was coming to an end, the City Council sought to seize the replacement opportunity to improve lighting quality and reduce energy consumption. Due to requirements for luminaire lifespan and quality, the City Council ultimately chose Philips DigiStreet LED street lights paired with the Interact City smart connected road lighting system.
"We have a clear sustainability plan for the lighting system. This is a major innovation for energy saving and cost reduction," said Antonio Morales, President of the Gran Canaria City Council. "Philips DigiStreet LED street lights and the Interact City smart connected road lighting system will reduce energy costs by 50%, allowing the installation costs to be amortized before the end of the luminaires' lifecycle."


The Interact City system provides the Gran Canaria City Council with real-time monitoring of lighting status, collects and analyzes data, and dispatches maintenance tasks to the maintenance team. Philips DigiStreet LED luminaires feature anti-glare properties, enhancing visual comfort, providing more uniform light distribution and more accurate color rendering. Philips DigiStreet LED uses standard Zhaga connectors and offers users comprehensive control capabilities through the Interact City system.
"Luminaires using Zhaga connectors prepare highways for future upgrades, providing monitoring of environmental data including motion, tilt, vibration, and noise. This will provide insights for optimized decision-making by the City Council," said Josep Martínez, General Manager of Signify Iberia.
The system offers easy maintenance, point-to-point management, and real-time adjustment capabilities for various situations on the highway. For example, increasing brightness in areas where accidents occur or dimming to 30% brightness when no vehicles are passing. This road lighting system can also meet the City Council's new smart connectivity needs in the future.
Another significant aspect of this project is compliance with local dark sky regulations. The Canary Islands have the darkest skies in Europe, offering excellent stargazing conditions and hosting several internationally renowned observatories. All installed luminaires must comply with the relevant regulations of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands and the Canary Islands Light Pollution Regulations.
