Deliver a premium guest experience with lower energy consumption and operating costs

The hotel industry is facing increasingly stringent environmental protection requirements. The industry's carbon emissions must be reduced by 66% by 2030 and by 90% by 2050 to meet the 2-degree Celsius warming control target of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21). Commissioned by global lighting leader Signify (Euronext Amsterdam ticker: LIGHT), Cundall conducted research on mid-range and luxury hotels. The study shows that adopting Interact Hospitality can significantly reduce energy consumption without affecting stay quality and guest comfort. This smart connected hotel room management system provides an intuitive room management control panel. Compared to traditional non-smart operational models, a luxury hotel can reduce energy consumption per room by 28% at 80% occupancy. When guests set the thermostat to "Energy saving" mode, energy consumption can be further reduced by 10%.

Hotels are major energy consumers, and due to their focus on service quality, their energy consumption levels have always been high in the tertiary industry. One possible explanation is that hotels always prioritize guest comfort and experience. However, besides asking guests to reduce towel replacements and use non-disposable amenities, Cundall's research shows that integrated hotel control systems for air conditioning, lighting, and power can play a significant role in energy saving, helping hotels achieve the energy saving targets set by the International Tourism Partnership without affecting guest comfort.

"Signify's Interact Hospitality system makes a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption. It controls lighting, air conditioning, power, and charging outlets in guest rooms, and monitors curtains. For example, hotels can optimize energy consumption by automatically adjusting the temperature in unoccupied rooms and opening curtains upon guest check-in," said Jella Sergers, Global General Manager for the Hotel Industry at Signify.

Signify's research shows that 65% of energy saving benefits come from the integration of Interact Hospitality with hotel property management systems. The remaining 35% of energy saving comes from real-time room occupancy control.

"Temperature control systems commonly used in hotels often provide temperatures that are too high or too low, causing significant indoor-outdoor temperature differences. Signify has introduced a recommended temperature range called 'Adaptive Comfort Setpoint,'" added Sergers. Understanding the comfortable temperature range can provide more energy saving options.

"The Interact Hospitality system automatically updates temperature settings within the hotel according to seasonal changes, balancing energy consumption and optimal guest comfort," said Marcus Eckersley, Managing Director at Signify.

"Although this study focused on the significant energy saving performance of hotels in tropical regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, we expect similar energy saving heating effects in temperate regions such as Europe and North America. Compared to continuing to use non-smart control systems, hoteliers can achieve rewarding returns from smart upgrades," added Marcus Eckersley.

Through its Application Program Interface (API), the Interact Hospitality system connects with various information systems in the hotel, such as housekeeping, engineering, and bedside tablets. In addition to maximizing energy efficiency and achieving sustainability goals, employee productivity and guest experience are also enhanced. The intuitive room management control panel of Interact Hospitality displays guest needs and room status in real time, simplifying operational processes, improving turnover efficiency, and minimizing impact on guests.
