1. Background Analysis:

Lianyungang — the central point of China's ten-thousand-li coastline and the eastern bridgehead of the New Eurasian Land Bridge.

Lianyungang City is located in the northeast of Jiangsu Province and is renowned both domestically and internationally for its "unique locational advantages, well-connected transportation network, abundant resources, and late-mover advantages in coastal development." As one of China's top ten seaports, Lianyungang has become an important comprehensive international trade hub port in China.

Lianyungang also boasts abundant tourism resources, enjoying the reputation of being the "Crystal Capital of China" and one of China's Top Ten Quiet Cities. It features numerous scenic spots and a rich historical and cultural heritage. The city has 20 various tourist attractions, including four national 4A-level tourist areas: Huaguo Mountain, Liandao Island, Kongwang Mountain, and Yuwan. Famous sites include Jiangsu's only Liandao Coastal Tourism Resort, Huaguo Mountain—the hometown of Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) from Journey to the West, the Kongwang Mountain cliff carvings featuring China's earliest Buddhist statues, and the Jiangjunya rock paintings, the only coastal site in China reflecting the relics of matriarchal society ancestors, all of which are captivating.

4. Design Principles

(1) Principle of specificity

Comply with the overall landscape lighting plan of Lianyungang City, closely align with its development positioning, functions, and layout characteristics, and shape a concise and highly contemporary light environment with high standards and quality.

(2) Principle of intelligence

The entire landscape lighting system should be easy to manage and control, allowing the setup of lighting modes such as normal mode, regular festival mode, and major festival mode as needed.

(3) Human-centered principle

The entire lighting landscape takes the satisfaction of people’s physiological, psychological, and emotional needs as the primary design criterion.

(4) Principle of integrity and individuality

Starting from the whole, avoid overly fragmented expressions and strengthen the individuality of the lighting landscape.

(5) Principle of aesthetic coordination

Emphasize the artistry of lighting landscapes and consider their harmony with the urban environment.

(6) Principles of Green Lighting

Make full use of high-tech and new energy sources, select efficient and energy-saving electric light sources, control glare, and prevent light pollution.

(7) Principles of Safety and Practicality

Ensure the inherent safety of the lighting system and prioritize practicality in luminaire selection.

5. Design Standards

Urban and Rural Planning Law of the People's Republic of China

Standard for Lighting Design of Urban Roads CJJ45-2006

Standard for Nightscape Lighting Design of Urban Areas JGJ/T 163-2008

Code for Architectural Lighting Design GB50034

Other national and local laws, regulations, and standards

VI. Design Philosophy

Shape cultural connotation, appreciate architectural artistic conception

Optimize lighting functions, showcase regional characteristics

  “线型之美”“和谐之美”,通过色温的变化不仅体现了建筑本身的文化意境,也突显了建筑细部特征!整体塑造建筑结构,稳重大气,浑然一体。

7. Location Analysis

The entire sports center consists of four venues with distinct shapes, forming a harmonious, unified, subtle, and balanced relationship. Nighttime lighting adopts a combination of points, lines, and surfaces, while strictly controlling the light from luminaires in the plaza to reduce light pollution on the building's own light environment. Strengthen connections and interactions with surrounding areas, and flexibly reserve space for future development.

Scheme Design

Lighting landscape design is an extension and sublimation of architectural design. Therefore, the design of architectural lighting landscapes should fully utilize the architectural carrier to reproduce the beauty of the building's form, endow the architecture with spirituality and life, and enhance emotional expression and the creation of nighttime ambiance.

The lighting design for this project takes "A Thousand Sails Racing" as its theme, striving to express the cultural and artistic nature of the lighting landscape through the building's form and cultural connotations, reflecting Lianyungang City's humanistic qualities and lighting technology level. Therefore, in the design process, we shaped another iconic nightscape for Lianyungang City through changes in light and shadow, clever design of light color, reasonable dynamic control, and extensive application of LED luminaires.

Design Theme: "A Thousand Sails Racing"

The entire architectural lighting primarily uses "surface" lighting methods. The building ceiling adopts high-power yellow LED wall washers, while the facade background wall uses LED wall washers to illuminate the facade from top to bottom. The light color design features three colors with strong Chinese national and Lianyungang regional characteristics: "Chinese Red, Noble Yellow, Ocean Blue." During festivals, these can be set to change colors synchronously, balancing motion and stillness to create a dreamy and mesmerizing light environment, thereby expressing the lighting landscape of the project's visual subject—the building facade. The masts use white light transmission to embody the aesthetic of uprightness and strength. By contrasting with the background wall colors, the structural features of the building are emphasized, forming a "silhouette" lighting art effect. On major holidays, powerful beams shoot straight into the night sky, majestic and grand, controlled to create a "rowing" dynamic effect, symbolizing the landscape intention of "A Thousand Sails Racing." It makes people feel as if they are on a sailboat, with seagulls flying past, feeling the fresh, humid sea breeze with a faint scent of the sea, gently caressing them. White clouds drift in the sky as one breaks through the waves against the wind, sailing far away, inspiring endless reverie.

This project adopts the latest technological achievement, "secondary lens" technology, to efficiently utilize light energy through precise light control and optimal control of glare. This achieves the goals of artistic lighting landscapes and a comfortable lighting environment, thereby avoiding situations where only landscape artistry is emphasized, resulting in an inability to achieve lighting environment "comfort" during later engineering implementation.

The swimming pool building has distinct architectural features, resembling a "pearl on the sea." The lighting design fully reflects the building's characteristics and aesthetic beauty, embodying its noble, elegant, solemn, and profound temperament.

LED point lights gradually wrap the building from top to bottom, transitioning from dense to sparse, and are set to color-changing or gradient running effects during festivals, shaping the landscape intention of the "pearl on the sea." The circular openings of the building use LED floodlighting to highlight its structural features, reproducing the rhythmic beauty of the architectural lighting landscape.

The stadium's architectural form resembles a conch shell. The nightscape lighting emphasizes the roof features, with a serene and ethereal blue as the dominant tone. Narrow yellow beams highlight the "conch shell patterns," reinforcing the building's sculptural characteristics. The facade creates a dialogue with the dome through variations in light color temperature, giving the stadium a noble and translucent aura under the night sky.

The National Fitness Hall consists of a main and a secondary structure connected together, resembling a large family. The nightscape lighting focuses on the building facade, with an idealistic and sporty white as the dominant tone. LED module lights are used locally, outlining the roof to highlight the structural characteristics of the building.
