Case Study | Inventronics Helps Reading Station Hill Redefine Urban Public Space
When urban public spaces are no longer just places “to pass through”,
Light also begins to take on a greater role in connecting people with the city.
Beyond basic passage, people are increasingly focused on the sense of停留 (staying), interaction, and nighttime experience within these spaces. In urban renewal projects, lighting not only needs to meet basic functions but is gradually becoming an essential component for sustaining spatial ambiance and energizing urban vitality. How to use lighting to preserve this spatial value has become a key issue in urban design.

The Station Hill project in Reading, UK is a prime example of this.
From an inefficient space to a new urban gateway
Station Hill is a landmark mixed-use development in Reading that reconnects the central train station with the city center through innovative public space design.
The project site was formerly the commercial district of Friars Walk and surrounding transport facilities. Through comprehensive planning and regeneration, this once underutilized area has been transformed into an urban node integrating offices, residences, and public activities.

The project includes modern office buildings and residential towers, while landscape and circulation designs guide pedestrian flow naturally from the station toward the city center. Among them, One Station Hill, as Reading’s tallest building, serves as a major visual focal point for the entire area.
System capabilities support complex urban scenarios
During implementation, Inventronics provided a linear lighting system solution covering multiple application scenarios. By combining LED strips, linear modules, and flexible linear lighting systems, the project highlights architectural details while creating a more unified and layered nighttime lighting environment in public areas.
Inventronics’ LED drivers, integrated with a DALI lighting control system, enable precise dimming and seamless integration into the overall project lighting control system, further blending functional lighting with architectural expression.
This lighting solution has been widely applied across various areas of the project, including railing and handrail lighting along Friars Walk, perimeter lighting around rooftop terraces, recessed lights embedded in seating structures, linear lighting within entrance canopies, and landscape and planting area lighting in public spaces.

In particular, the use of flexible strip solutions allows the design team to achieve a more continuous yet restrained expression of light while maintaining the building’s overall minimalist aesthetic.
Leveraging a complete product portfolio of drivers, modules, and control systems, Inventronics helps different components work together efficiently, reducing system integration complexity. Combined with mature constant-voltage solutions and supporting components, it can further adapt to diverse architectural applications.
Meanwhile, based on long-term collaboration with lighting designers, Inventronics can better balance design expression with technical performance requirements, offering a 7-year product warranty and up to a 10-year system warranty, providing long-term reliable support for complex architectural lighting projects.

Light connects the urban and human experience
As urban public spaces evolve toward greater complexity and experiential richness, lighting is shifting from a mere “functional fixture” to an important language for shaping spatial experiences.
In the Reading Station Hill project, lighting not only fulfills basic spatial functions but also serves as a vital medium linking architecture, landscapes, and urban experiences, further strengthening the connection between people and the city.
Looking ahead, Inventronics will continue to deepen its expertise in city-scale and building-scale lighting applications. Relying on stable, reliable products and system capabilities, we will provide long-term support for global urban space upgrades, ensuring that light better connects function, aesthetics, and experience.
